An Eventful Autumn

Hello,

I am back from an unplanned hiatus from writing my Blog, with a post sharing my eventful autumn. Over the past couple of months I have been working on various commissions, with long days of shooting and the subsequent hours of editing. My work has taken me to the dance studio, court side, pitch side, in nurseries, in gyms and in theatres.

Just as my previous post, I have continued to cover club photography duties for EFL Championship teams Leeds United and Middlesbrough FC. In addition to photographing directly for these clubs I have also attended other games covering for agency Pro Sports Images. Football photography has an incredibly fast workflow, with images being; selected, imported, captioned, edited, exported, uploaded within a few minutes of a goal being scored. I don’t often get to review my shots, but here are some images I’ve picked out to share with you.

Recently I have been working with sports content creators, Sportsbeat, part of the BeatMediaGroup. It has been great working with the team, and it has taken me to some really exciting and interesting events where I have had the chance to meet lots of sports celebrities! These images have accompanied local and national articles as well as official social channels.

I was really happy to have been asked to work with BBC Comic Relief covering a visit to a children’s play centre by ex Girls Aloud turned solo pop star, Nadine Coyle. This was a lovely job to cover, celebrating children’s right to play. Naturally, everyone in the building had a huge smile on their face!

As with last year, I was back photographing for the British Basketball League and Women’s British Basketball League. This included photographing headshots for the players in addition to action shots from games for use on the official social channels and website. Basketball is a great game to photograph, with it’s own set of challenges. The fast pace nature of the game can present some very physical, and therefore rewarding images.

In September I was in the Rambert studios photographing their Season Launch party. This was an opportunity for the company to invite guests and share with them exiting news and information on the new works that are on the horizon. Additionally, there was a unique and special performance by both Rambert and Rambert2.

Lastly, I joined up yet again with the Sadler’s Wells Young Associates as they presented their new works for the stage. Having worked with these young choreographers sporadically over the past 18 months it has been great to observe the development and evolution of everyone’s individual styles.

I am very lucky to be taking a holiday soon where I will have space to reflect on what has been a great year. So do look out for a special 2018 review which I will be publishing sometime before Christmas.

More soon,

Stephen

On the Road

Hello all,

I am very excited to share with you the things I have been up to over the past month! Since my last blog I have been travelling around the UK working with Rambert and 2Faced Dance Company. Additionally, I am proud to include the British Basketball League (BBL) to my client list.

The beginning of October marked the start of the BBL Championship League and as one of the official photographers for the league, I was asked to travel around to fixtures, photographing action shots from games in addition to headshots for the league rosters. I have absolutely loved photographing the action from courtside. Basketball is a physical, fast-paced sport and as such, extremely photogenic! Here’s a few of my favourite shots from the past few games.

Earlier this month I headed to The Place to photograph production images for 2Faced Dance Company’s new production OUTLANDS. This triple bill of contemporary dance showcases and celebrates three female choreographers; Hemabharathy Palani, Ronita Mookerji and Emma-Jayne Park commissioned as part of 2Faced Dance Company’s The BENCH INDIA and UK programme.

I joined Rambert a couple of times this month both in the studio and on stage. First I headed to Rambert HQ, joining the dancers in the studio as they rehearsed for their new creation Goat choreographed by Ben Duke. Goat is inspired by the music and spirit of Nina Simone, with a selection of her best-loved songs performed live on stage by jazz singer Nia Lynn. As a dance theatre work, it was great to see the company working with text and theatrical elements, I look forward to seeing it on stage.

Finally, I headed to The Lowry, Salford to join the company as they premiered Andonis Foniadakis’ new work Symbiosis. I had photographed this piece in rehearsal a couple of months prior (Bumper Issue) so I had a good idea of what to expect. In the studio you are only exposed to the movement choreography, which can be a beautiful thing by itself, but it is only when you arrive at the theatre that all the design elements come together to shape the work. Symbiosis had a fantastic creative team with music from Ilan Eshkeri, lighting design from Sakis Birbilis and costume design by Anastasios Sofroniou all the elements came together to create a visually stunning work. After photographing the work I was able to sit back and enjoy the premiere performance which was stunning and the dancers looked incredible, I look forward to watching it again at Sadler’s Wells!
