Trains & Planes

As promised I have been up north and overseas in the past month! Rambert had their premiere of Malgorzata Dzierzon’s new work Flight at The Lowry. During this busy week Rambert also performed The Future programme. The Future is a collaboration between Rambert and The Lowry showcasing original works choreographed and performed by Rambert’s dancers and artists from the north of England. Due to the fact I was performing in Flight, I wasn’t able to capture a full gallery of the new work, but it didn’t stop me from photographing altogether!

After performances on the main stage wrapped up, Rambert and a number of visiting choreographers and artistes moved to the more intimate stage space known as, The Studio. I had been asked to photograph a full gallery of the event, and in doing so I also produced a gallery for DanceTabs.com. I had a particular connection with the solo Vessel, choreographed by Nadia Iftkhar for Company Of Others and performed by Sophie Hutchinson. Vessel is a solo rooted in the female experience of becoming an every day contortionists, trying to conform in order to be loved and then finally feeling rooted and free. Finding comfort in power and autonomy.

This month I also returned to The Netherlands for 2016’s edition of Nederlandse Dansdagen (Dutch Dance Festival). Every first weekend of October, the festival presents remarkable performances from up-and-coming choreographers as well as from established dance companies in the city of Maastricht. My job was to photograph the dance works from the wings, which is a very privileged place to be, as you are sharing the space with the performers. Luckily, it is such a familiar environment, and I feel right at home squashed up against the flats shooting the action! I created two galleries for DanceTabs.com from my time at the festival which can be found via the links.

More soon,

Into Europe

Hello again,

The last 3 months have flown by, and I have plenty of really exciting things to share!

Back in October I had the great pleasure of flying out to Maastricht, Netherlands, to photograph at this year’s Nederlandse Dansdagen. The dance festival is a 3 day event which takes place annually on the first weekend of October, bringing together many of the great Dutch dance companies. I was given full access to the wings and backstage areas to capture the works from new and exciting angles, and with a packed shooting schedule, I got to work. It really was a pleasure to photograph here, seeing new dancers, new works and new companies is always inspiring and it gave me a fresh look at the dance scene. The festival was brimming with talent and great works, but at a push my highlights would be photographing Scapino Ballet’s new work, Henry by Itamar Serussi, capturing NBprojects' piece, 3: The Garden by artistic director, Nicole Beutler and finding the time on the last morning to watch Rise Up by Guilherme Miotto.
Upon returning to London I created an exclusive album of the festival for DanceTabs to run, which can be found by clicking the button below.

I was also very happy to see my images published in Ballett am Rhein’s dance annual, b-No.6, a few weeks back. Ex-dancer turned choreographer, Hubert Essakow commissioned me to capture a number of images for an interview piece in the German magazine ahead of his own choreographic commission with the company later in the new year. It was great fun working with Hubert, shooting in a number of locations around London’s Southbank.

Most recently, I have finally got with the times and created my own Instagram account, stephenwrightphotography! Here is where I will be posting some of my existing favourite shots, and plenty of new material. Check it out and see what you think!

Additionally, I have attended some amazing photocalls for some great companies, including the likes of Balletboyz, Phoenix Dance Theatre and Rambert (Click the names for their respected galleries). To keep up to date on all my new galleries and pictures follow me on Twitter, give my Facebook page a like and follow me on Instagram!
