Sports, Science & Culture

Hello again,

I had an interesting and fruitful November photographing a variety of dance and outreach events. It also included a trip to Leicester to photograph at the FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers between Great Britain and Greece.

Firstly, I headed to Laban Theatre to capture and photograph Theo Clinkard’s new work, This Bright Field. Having photographed Theo’s work on a number of occasions, I knew I was going to enjoy myself photographing the new work. Danced beautifully by the entire cast, I wasn’t disappointed. Here is a small selection from the work. To see my full gallery of This Bright Field click Here.

Next up I was at Sadler’s Wells to photograph New Wave Associate Alexander Whitley and the Gillespie School’s showcase performance. This was a wonderful collaboration between the primary school and Alexander Whitley Dance Company, using dance workshops to engage young children in solar science. In his introduction, Alexander explained how the collaboration could encourage engagement in science amongst young girls, whilst also making dance a fun accessible activity for young boys. It was great to see the children take such pride in their performance, and I felt privileged to photograph their experiences.

Returning to Sadler’s Wells, I photographed Rambert’s new work, Goat choreographed by Ben Duke. Having been connected to Rambert company for the past 8 years, I have never seen the company present a work like this. Having trained as both an Actor and a Dancer, Ben Duke's choreography often explores the overlap between dance and theatre. Critics and audiences have always celebrated Rambert as being a company of versatile dancers, and Rambert's performance at Sadlers Wells this autumn certainly lived up to that reputation! To see my full gallery of Goat click Here.

Lastly, I headed to Leicester for the FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers between Great Britain and Greece. Having photographed a large number of the British Basketball League games, I was excited to photograph my first international game, especially one of such importance. Unfortunately, Great Britain came away second best, but not before pushing the game into overtime and giving the crowd an awful lot to shout about. It was a shame for the loss, but I think everyone in attendance was proud of the team’s display.

On the Road

Hello all,

I am very excited to share with you the things I have been up to over the past month! Since my last blog I have been travelling around the UK working with Rambert and 2Faced Dance Company. Additionally, I am proud to include the British Basketball League (BBL) to my client list.

The beginning of October marked the start of the BBL Championship League and as one of the official photographers for the league, I was asked to travel around to fixtures, photographing action shots from games in addition to headshots for the league rosters. I have absolutely loved photographing the action from courtside. Basketball is a physical, fast-paced sport and as such, extremely photogenic! Here’s a few of my favourite shots from the past few games.

Earlier this month I headed to The Place to photograph production images for 2Faced Dance Company’s new production OUTLANDS. This triple bill of contemporary dance showcases and celebrates three female choreographers; Hemabharathy Palani, Ronita Mookerji and Emma-Jayne Park commissioned as part of 2Faced Dance Company’s The BENCH INDIA and UK programme.

I joined Rambert a couple of times this month both in the studio and on stage. First I headed to Rambert HQ, joining the dancers in the studio as they rehearsed for their new creation Goat choreographed by Ben Duke. Goat is inspired by the music and spirit of Nina Simone, with a selection of her best-loved songs performed live on stage by jazz singer Nia Lynn. As a dance theatre work, it was great to see the company working with text and theatrical elements, I look forward to seeing it on stage.

Finally, I headed to The Lowry, Salford to join the company as they premiered Andonis Foniadakis’ new work Symbiosis. I had photographed this piece in rehearsal a couple of months prior (Bumper Issue) so I had a good idea of what to expect. In the studio you are only exposed to the movement choreography, which can be a beautiful thing by itself, but it is only when you arrive at the theatre that all the design elements come together to shape the work. Symbiosis had a fantastic creative team with music from Ilan Eshkeri, lighting design from Sakis Birbilis and costume design by Anastasios Sofroniou all the elements came together to create a visually stunning work. After photographing the work I was able to sit back and enjoy the premiere performance which was stunning and the dancers looked incredible, I look forward to watching it again at Sadler’s Wells!
